Re: Other Choirs and/or Singers that you like
I hate to admit it, Maarten, but I'm having a bit of a hard time with Jonathan Dove. Very hot-cold, in a way. I heard his 'The Three Kings' and 'Into Thy Hands' and quite liked them (absolutely loved the first one, in fact), but I've not latched on to any of his other work yet like I have to those and have even been roundly unimpressed by some. I think I may just be like that sometimes with more contemporary music, particularly if there's organ involved.

Yes, it's a mixed bag with Dove, I found that as well. But for me it also depends on the day or the mood. Today I enjoyed some pieces much more than I did on the first listens earlier this week This particular piece I posted really grew on me and now it won't leave my head
btw I intend to post 'Run, shepherds, run' around Christmas time - hope I remember by then

Well, I do love Christmas.maartendas wrote:btw I intend to post 'Run, shepherds, run' around Christmas time - hope I remember by then
I recently read a review that described this Tavener piece ('Lament of the Mother of God') as 'the Pietà in sound', and listening to it in the quiet now, I'm finding that a very apt description. I love the text for how utterly human it is. Kind of gutting, but quietly stunning in the way of a lot of Tavener's work.

Our good friend Treble has uploaded a beautiful piece of 15th century music performed by Eton College. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did:

It's teasing me with those bits of plainchant thrown in (I have a growing fondness for plainchant...)
Not sure what to think of it as a whole. I think it's too 'fragmented' for my taste. The tenors and basses have a wonderful warm sound to them though. There's something about the boys' voices that I don't quite like as much.

Wow. Just found this video of Westminster Abbey Choir and it is just perfection to my ears. Lately I have had mixed feelings about the Abbey Choir, I felt that they didn't always deliver as consistently as St. Paul's or Wells, but I am almost ashamed to admit that, having heard this (and loving the place so much... ). So.. enjoy!

It was quite easy to distinguish the soloist from the others.
Enjoyed the low voices as well.
I think that cathedral has good acoustics!

Great song. It sounded beautiful. I agree with Murkskis, that church sounded like it had wonderful acoustics.Sue wrote:Cathedral Singing Boys Limburg, Germany

Lead, kindly light amid the circling gloom.
Lead thou me on.

Today during the 9/11 memorial on TV, the Brooklyn Youth Chorus sang the National Anthem of America, and I thought it was beautiful. This is bad quality, but it is the only one that was somewhat decent.

I know. It was my first day of kindergarten and my dad was supposed to go into to work that day, and he would walk through the world trade center around the time the first plane hit, but he stayed home and watched me get on the bus instead. Things like that truly make me believe in miracles. This song made me get very teary eyed as well.Szepilona wrote: It made me cry...I can't believe it's been ten years.
